Lunafest is a traveling short film festival stopping in Austin. Every film is by, for, and about women with all proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Fund and Ballet Austin. The traveling film festival will visit 150 cities and screen stories of reflection, hope and humor from around the world in front of 20,000 people. In an effort to promote awareness about women’s issues, highlight women filmmakers, and bring women together in their communities, this fundraising festival is hitting Austin in true red carpet style hosted by Clif Bar & Company at the Butler Dance Education Center/Ballet Austin. The reception at 6:30 pm will be followed by the film’s screening at 8 pm.
Nine short films by women filmmakers highlight women as leaders in society. Participating films encompass everything from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. Established in 2000 by Luna, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, Lunafest connects women, their stories and their causes through film. This traveling film festival spotlights the work of a diverse array of talented women filmmakers with intelligent, funny and thought-provoking themes.
Equally important, Lunafest can be used as a “fundraiser-in-a-box”, helping hosts raise money for nonprofits in their own communities, as well as for the main beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund. 100 percent of all net proceeds are donated to charity. Since its inception, Lunafest has grown from a single annual event to a coast-to-coast force with more than 150 North American screenings each season. To date, 92 filmmakers have been featured, nearly $1.2 million dollars has been raised and thousands of attendees have come away moved, entertained and inspired.
Lunafest’s main beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund, is dedicated to eliminating the environmental causes of breast cancer. Through education, policy initiatives and other innovative campaigns, the Breast Cancer Fund mobilizes the public to help stop this devastating epidemic affecting 1 in 8 women.
Don’t miss your chance to enjoy great film while both empowering women and contributing to charity.
